CF8 and CF8M are familiar cast stainless designations in pump and valve discussions. A key compositional distinction is the molybdenum associated with CF8M. That distinction can be relevant to corrosion selection, but it does not make CF8M a universal solution for every aggressive medium.

Start with the exposure the casting will actually see

The process fluid, temperature and contaminants influence suitability. Cleaning cycles, deposits and stagnant conditions may be just as important as the nominal medium. A quotation that says water service without further detail can leave too much uncertainty for a sound material choice.

Ask the responsible design or materials team to establish the required grade for the duty. General comparisons can explain the options, but should not be used as a substitute for application-specific selection where corrosion consequences matter.

Keep the cast designation in the purchase requirement

CF8 and CF8M are often discussed alongside familiar wrought stainless names. That relationship can help communication, but the casting should still be ordered under an appropriate specification and grade. Product form and the governing requirements are part of the definition.

The Nickel Institute’s stainless piping reference distinguishes cast and wrought designations in its material tables. For a current order, use the applicable specification and edition rather than treating an old reference table as the purchase document.

Evaluate the manufacturing condition as well as chemistry

Heat treatment, surface condition and any production welding requirements should be included in the review. A chemical designation alone does not explain how the component will be supplied or what inspections accompany it.

For a machined valve body, clarify which surfaces require finishing and when any pressure or leak examination takes place. The resulting evidence should correspond to the delivered component, not an earlier rough state that no longer represents it.

Compare price only after the requirement is fixed

If two suppliers quote different grades, resolve that difference before ranking the offers. A lower alloy price is not a saving if the proposal fails the service requirement, while a more expensive grade needs a clear engineering reason.
